This started as a "scratch pad" for me to keep track of what I was working on, but I realized that return visitors to STRAW.COM would find a list of changes and additions helpful in finding what was new. The earliest entry in 'What's New?' is from Dec. 1995 when this web site first opened. This web site is maintained by Susan Druding.

Squeezing it all out - gif

December 9, 2004 - Crocheted Cotton Chenille Washcloth - this 2-color washcloth can be made in many combinations with our Cotton Chenille. A great gift. 2 skeins make 4 cloths.

December 5, 2004 - A new Ann Norling Pattern #64 - Children's Poncho Pattern. Many gauges and many sizes - see sample photos, including one in Cotton Chenille trimmed with Splash.

December 5, 2004 - DragonFly doubled scarf, knit on size 35 DAISY needles - only 6 sts wide! Knit it and wear it within 2 hours or less!

December 4, 2004 - a knit Party necktie pattern - all in garter and uses only one ball of PARTY nylon ribbon. A tie for a man, but great for a woman to wear, too.

December 1, 2004 - Tomato Red and Orange make a showy scarf of DragonFly + Fizz, knitted on 17s lengthwise.

November 27, 2004 - a Triangle Party "Stolette" (a term I made up for a small stole) knit with our new Party ribbon and Kid Merino. These new yarns will be arriving in late December - early January. Tie it in front, fasten it with a floral pin or brooch, or wear the tie on your shoulder - see photos for more details and the free pattern.

November 27, 2004 - A new Squiggle Card is posted which includes the 7 new colors for Spring '05 coming for Squiggle.

November 27, 2004 - Deco-Stardust sample card - this extra gleaming 55% metallic fiber version of Deco-Ribbon has 14 jewel-like colors and high yardage (118 yds/50 grams!). The feel is very soft for such a high metallic fiber content, too. The metallic fiber used in Deco-Stardust is much softer than the older style lurex often used in knitting yarns. Deco-Stardust will begin arriving in late December.

November 26, 2004 - Whew! Finally got the new DragonFly sample card scanned! It was a difficult one to show online - I hope this gives you an idea of what fun DragonFly can be to knit with! I'll get some photos of balls of DragonFly up soon, too. Meanwhile the pastel colors and the black-white have arrived!

November 21, 2004 - And a pair of Holiday Hats combining Fling, Cotton Chenille and Splash have a festive look. With the new printed colors of Fling you could make some great looking variations on this for any season!

November 21, 2004 - A POOF Santa Hat in red and white. Of course, you can make it in many other colors for non-Christmas look!

November 21, 2004 - Party (ribbon) + Little Flowers in Sandstone and Antique colors makes a subtle, dressy scarf. Little Flowers has just a touch of metallic fiber for highlights.

November 20, 2004 - A new "jewelry scarf" in a combination of Deco-Stardust and Party (nylon ribbon) - high sheen and dressy. Knit on the bias.

November 14, 2004 - A new Chanel-styled jacket of Summer Net with Fling trim. The body of the jacket is done in Butterfly Stitch Pattern to make an interesting texture.

November 14, 2004 - the free pattern is now up for the Retro-Pullover in Fizz-Stardust, Whisper and Deco-Ribbon. It has a wonderful soft feel and is highlighted with metallic fiber in the Fizz-Stardust.

November 13, 2004 - A crocheted Un-Astrakan hat - in POOF - crocheted with a K+ hook and 2 balls of POOF. This pattern is off our site.

November 12, 2004 - New sample cards posted for Mikado Ribbon and POOF to show the new colors being added for Spring '05. 12 new colors added to POOF and 6 new to Mikado Ribbon.

November 9, 2004 - Here's an easy to crochet Baby Blanket in 2 colors of Deco-Ribbon. We used traditional baby blue and pink, but you could make wild, fashion color combinations for the baby in your life, too!

November 8, 2004 - A wonderfully textured, soft stole in GLAM ribbon with Shimmer added to make the fringe lush and drapey.

November 5, 2004 - Updated sample card scans of two new yarns: PARTY (a 100% high luster nylon ribbon) and KID MERINO (a lace weight blend of kid mohair-merino wool and micro fiber nylon) and SUMMER NET with 7 new colors.

November 4, 2004 - A retro sweater in the new Fizz-Stardust, Whisper and Deco-Ribbon. This has the look some of us remember of the angora sweater days - but now with a bit of metallic fiber glitz. Make this in the pale blue combination shown, or try pale pink, red or white or black for dramatic effect.

November 3, 2004 - Poncho knit in Musique with Fizz accents. Easy to knit, warm to wear.

October 30, 2004 - Two new scarves: the new PARTY Ribbon Scarf has a jewelry look. The Big Net + Splash scarf has a bold and fun look. [Note the new Party ribbon yarn will arrive in Dec-Jan.]

October 23, 2004 - I always knit a lot of swatches when we get new yarns and this season is no exception. I'm starting a page of experiments using Deco-Stardust and you can see them here. The first two are combined with Splash and with PARTY.

October 19, 2004 - a new Spring yarn (Little Flowers) combined in a scarf with Fizz in sage color. The look? Little mini flowers in the grass. See the scarf and easy pattern here. Little Flowers novelty yarn (in 10 colors with a dash of metallic fiber in it for some gleam) is great to add to any yarn for a look of a whole new yarn!

October 19, 2004 - Scans added for new Spring '05 colors for these yarns: Fizz, Splash, Choo-Choo

October 18, 2004 - See sample cards for two exciting new yarns coming for Spring:
Kid Merino - a 240 yds/25 gram light as a feather yarn spun of kid mohair, merino wool and microfiber nylon. Knit is one or two-stranded or run it with other yarns to add softness and loft. 19 colors to combine or use alone, see swatches here.

October 14, 2004 - Two new Scarves in two new yarns:

October 13, 2004 - A new poncho featuring one of the new CPY yarns for 2005: Deco-Stardust Ribbon + Whisper Poncho. Easy and fast to knit with highlights of Deco-Stardust metallic fiber in 2 colors.

October 10, 2004 - A Holiday Garland is fast to knit with Tingle and Fling - 2 balls of Tingle, 1 each of 2 colors of Fling will make over 18 feet of garland!

October 9, 2004 - See a preview of the 6 new colors being added to Deco-Ribbon for Spring '05. Some fun, cheerful colors - the first delivery is due in late November-December.

October 5, 2004 - LOTS of new things coming from Crystal Palace for late winter and early spring '05 - I've been scanning new colors and new yarn sample cards and quite a few are ready for viewing. Go to the YarnCards link at the top of any page on this site and check the yarns with the red letters and links to sample cards you'll see up and down the page - don't miss: Little Flowers (little rayon flowerettes on a fine nylon base thread), Fizz Stardust - a new version of popular Fizz with 14% metallic fiber, Fling - 8 new prints added,  Shimmer - new colors added - and other yarns with information and sample cards still to come.

October 4, 2004 - Just have to wish ourselves as Straw Into Gold a happy 33rd Year Anniversary. On Oct. 4, 1971 Straw Into Gold first opened as a little hand spinning supply shop (one of the first to offer spinning fibers and wheels in the USA) on College Ave. in No. Oakland, CA in a 500 sq ft shop. Seems not so long ago in some ways and very long ago in others. No one knew what we were doing sitting at our spinning wheels in those days!

October 3, 2004 - A preview of one of our new yarns - coming for Spring '04: Dragonfly, a fun, chunky eyelash that combines the look of Squiggle and Fling. It will knit alone or with other yarns - we'll be adding projects soon.

October 2, 2004 - See the striped pink-lilac poncho with beads - a new, alternate colorway of the striped poncho originally knit in white-black-red.  3 CPY Yarns used: Mikado Ribbon, Summer Net, Choo-Choo

September 27, 2004 - POOF Capelet - knit with 3 or 4 balls of Poof in size from Med-Lg to 4X. Very easy to knit this soft cozy little cape on size 11 circular needle. [pattern free offsite]

September 25, 2004 - Belts crocheted with designer yarns are all the rage now - here is a Belt crocheted with Deco-Ribbon + LightPipe. With 61 colors of Deco-Ribbon to choose from, you can make one for every outfit! This belt can be crocheted without LightPipe, too.

September 23, 2004 - Our Deco-Ribbon Jacket is in the new issue of Knit 'N Style magazine - see photo at right.

September 23, 2004 - Added two more poncho photos to the Ann Norling Ultimate Coverups pages, a Poof poncho and a poncho-ruana combining Merino Frappe and Waikiki.

September 15, 2004 - an openwork poncho knit on 17s - knit it quickly - in Big Net. See photo at the right.

September 14, 2004 - another scarf shows how versatile our ultra-soft, microfiber Whisper yarn is for combining with other yarns - this time it's a Deco-Ribbon + Whisper combination scarf knit fast on 17s.

September 13, 2004 - The MARTHA Scarf - a famous Martha wore a mink scarf to court - we have our own version of it here to knit in Merino Frappe and Fizz - click the 1, 2, 3, 4 links to see the original.

September 5, 2004 - Two more new sample card scans are up: Splash (32 printed and 13 solid colors) and GLAM, 16 colors.

September 3, 2004 - A new poncho in Iceland with a great looking bobble fringe edge. Knit in garter stitch in two colors with the soft merino wool - a great feel and warmth. See photo at right.

August 29, 2004 - New scans and updated yarn sample cards posted for the following: Deco-Ribbon, Trio, Fizz, Big Net, Raggedy, Shag  ... more coming soon.

August 24, 2004 - Here's a cute crocheted Passport Bag made with Deco-Ribbon. A free pattern on one of our dealer's web sites. Deco-Ribbon is a great ribbon for crochet.

August 22, 2004 - Combine Labrador and Whisper in a scarf - it will look like a whole new yarn! Here's a simple scarf to knit with one ball of each - scarf cost approx. $20

August 8, 2004 - A new free knit poncho pattern - this one is knit in Deco-Ribbon in a big, openwork stitch on size 17 needles. We are having fun adding free poncho patterns to the site. We hope you'll enjoy this one!

August 4, 2004 - Updated photos of Crystal Palace's new DAISY Needles. These are lightweight resin needles in fun colors. Sizes 9-35 and lengths 10" and 14". Great for young knitters, affordable for teaching and easy on your arms and hands in big sizes. The first shipment will arrive in mid-late October.

August 1, 2004 - An easy-to-knit poncho in GLAM - one rectangle knits up quickly on 13s. Trim with streamers of yarn and a laced shoulder or leave plain. Uses only 5 balls of Glam and costs less than $40 to make.

July 30, 2004 - See some fun with knitting a sleeve with Fizz - Eileen's Fizz Sleeve.

July 30, 2004 - Bolero Jacket knit with Trio and trimmed in Fizz. Here's the free pattern.

July 26, 2004 - Have a look at the newest Ann Norling pattern, Ultimate Cover-ups, pattern no. 63. It's a set of 7 different styles of ponchos, all easy to knit and fun to wear. Embellish them as you wish. Crystal Palace has collaborated with Ann Norling on this project - see the photos HERE.

July 24, 2004 - An easy-to-knit cropped jacket in Raggedy, CPY's wool blend fringed tape yarn. No button holes and minimal shaping make this quick to knit and easy enough for a beginning knitter. Raggedy makes a very cozy, soft feeling knit.

July 22, 2004 - An easy Baby Blanket in Summer Net yarn. Soft and cuddly feeling and knit in St st and Rev St st.

July 19, 2004 - A pattern is up for great new long jacket in Merino Frappe + Waikiki (with accents of Fizz, Glam and Deco-Ribbon) jacket.  A mini-photo is to the right here. This jacket is sized from a small up to an XX-Lg size.

June 25, 2004 - Here's a peek at the 8 new printed colors of Fling coming for Winter 2004

June 24, 2004 - Added photos to the Striped Poncho pattern, this pattern uses Mikado Ribbon, Summer Net and Choo-Choo.

June 23, 2004 - Sometimes it's interesting to take just one ball of a yarn and knit a very simple scarf to show how far one ball of yarn will go. Here's a scarf I knit last night in about one hour with one ball of POOF!  - on size 17 needles. It's 5" wide and 48" long with one 50 gram ball.

June 22, 2004 - Felting experiments with printed colors of Labrador and Iceland. I've been doing swatches for felting and thought I'd share them. Using printed colors makes the felt much more interesting, too. See my swatches here.

June 21, 2004 - a wonderful new jacket pattern in Deco-Ribbon here. Photos are up and the complete free knitting pattern will be posted by the end of June. It uses 3 colors of Deco-Ribbon in a half linen stitch with the colors blended between color changes. 4 alternate colorway photos are also posted. We will have the pattern up by the end of June - sized Sm, Med, Lg, X-Lg and XX-Lg.

June 19, 2004 - the poncho rage continues and we have added a 2nd "summer" poncho pattern - this one is striped and in 3 CPY yarns: Mikado Ribbon, Summer Net and Choo-Choo in an easy YO stitch pattern. Free Striped Poncho pattern is Here. Watch for more poncho patterns in coming weeks.

June 16, 2004 - New coming for Fall '04 - DAISY KNITTING NEEDLES and Stitch Holders. From a company in Japan, these thermo-resin plastic needles are for fun knitting, light weight, reasonable price and great colors. Sizes 10 to 35. Lengths 10" and 14". More details soon. See photos Here.

June 15, 2004 - new email address for reaching Crystal Palace Yarns - our old email address is drowning in Spam - (cpy -at- straw.com) and we are going to change our contact email to: cpyinfo -at- straw.com (where the -at- is replaced with the @ symbol for email).

June 8, 2004 - An easy-to-knit poncho in Choo-Choo, uses only 6 balls, is now up as a free pattern. Thanks to Sandy Blue for the design and the knitting. This is a nice summer weight poncho.

June 5, 2004 - Where do we get the squiggles to make Squiggle yarn? A question submitted by a knitter is answered - see photos of the squiggle beasties from which we shear our Squiggles twice a year. Photos here. And a free pattern to knit and felt your own Squiggle beastie.

June 1, 2004 - a felted bag with an Iceland merino wool base and Squiggle shaggy texture all over. Knit with one ball of each - pattern directions are here.

May 24, 2004 - A Very Red, Very Long scarf in Poof, Squiggle and Fling - fast to knit on 19s. 7.5" x 85" long.

May 18, 2004 - a glamorous metallic lace scarf knit in our new Soiree yarn. An easy lace pattern for anyone who has not knit lace before - Two balls will make this scarf. An under $20 scarf project.

May 16, 2004 - Here's a very fast scarf to make for Christmas wearing (or, of course any other colors, too!). It's Poof + Fling on size 17 needles.

May 7, 2004 - Here's an easy, big collared, oversize sweater in the new POOF yarn. Knits up fast on 11s or 13s and uses 10 balls of Poof.

May 5, 2004 - Knit your own Knitting Bag - Tote Bag with 4 balls of Trio. This free pattern is fun to knit with I-cord trim and handles and many color combinations possible.

May 4, 2004 - POOF (new microfiber textured chunky yarn) and Deco-Ribbon combine to make a quick, light and soft scarf knit on size 15 circulars lengthwise.

May 1, 2004 - A free pattern for a Glam sleeveless shell, "Shellegant". This medium size top uses only 6 balls of Glam. The Glam pattern is HERE.

April 28, 2004 - We've added 7 great new colors to GLAM. These are subtly printed to make jewel-like graduated tones. See the 7 new colors of Glam HERE.

April 28, 2004 - Soiree (metallic) + Mikado Ribbon make a dressy scarf. 2 balls of Mikado Ribbon and (black) one ball of Soiree (silver) - scarf pattern is here.  Soiree is a new, soft and lustrous metallic tubular yarn - New see the SOIREE sample card HERE.

April 28, 2004 - A New yarn for Fall '04: POOF  - a super soft microfiber nylon in a chunky weight - knits quickly and makes a very light, fleecy feeling garment. 11 solid colors and 5 prints. See POOF colors HERE.

April 24, 2004 - Four new printed colors + undyed ecru/white added to Musique for Fall '04 - see them HERE.

April 20, 2004 - a quick, easy scarf to knit with new Fling + Fizz. Knit on 17s it works up quickly and the metallic fiber in the Fling give it a little extra glitz. Endless color combinations are possible, too!

April 20, 2004 - A New Yarn: FLING A spaced eyelash yarn with nylon paper and little wisps of iridescent metallic fibers add to the look. This is a fun knit-along yarn to combine with just about anything. TWO Sample cards: full style Fling card HERE and Strip style card HERE.

April 19, 2004 - SPLASH - New Colors: 8 new solid colors and 5 new printed colors for Fall '04. These same 5 printed colors are also being added to Fizz and Deco-Ribbon.

April 18, 2004 - a new free pattern for a sleeveless shell, knit with Summer Net, an interesting textured cotton blend with a net/mesh look.

March 29, 2004 - 3 cell phone/mini-purses knit with with Deco-Ribbon (2 also add Splash and Fizz for trim).

March 28, 2004 - A new pattern for a Choo-Choo Cabled Sleeveless Shell in 5 sizes.

March 16, 2004 - it's time to move some of the bottom of this What's New? page to a 2nd "history" page to speed up the loading. Since the entries here go waaaay back to the beginning of this straw.com site in 1995! For those of you who like to peruse history - you will find a link at the Bottom of this page to the Pre-2002 stuff.

March 16, 2004 - a new version of Merino Frappe sample card is up now - a new scan allows you to see the colors more clearly.

March 11, 2004 - Ribbed Scarf knit with Squiggle + Trio - this model in red and pink combination.

March 6, 2004 - See a new Poncho to knit with Musique - uses only 5 x 100 gr skeins! It's a new Ann Norling pattern - ask at your local shop for this pattern, written in several gauges beginning with 2 sts/inch.

February 26, 2004 - Here's an all-Trio scarf (see photo at right) knit with a combination of garter stitch and wrap stitch. Here's the Trio scarf pattern. This scarf is under $20.

February 25, 2004 - Sometimes you knit a scarf that is so easy, it's embarrassing - but then it turns out to be so gorgeous that people stop you on the street and ask about it. This is one of those - plain garter, 15s, 12 sts - but this combination of TRIO and Squiggle in a scarf makes a great look - and it costs under $25.

February 23, 2004 - A new pair of scarves knit from Trio + Splash. The Splash went so far that I made two scarves from three balls of yarn! (2 balls of Trio and one ball of Splash) - see both here: A: Bias Knit on 15s and B: Lengthwise Knit on 17s

February 19, 2004 - A soft, cozy wide ribbed scarf in RAGGEDY, a wool blend fringed tape. Knit with 2 balls.

February 14, 2004 - the scanned sample card is up for TRIO, the new textured, 3-track tape yarn. Shipment due end May-early June for shops. See the TRIO card here.  See the sample scarf in the link below.

February 11, 2004 - A new yarn, TRIO, combined with a favorite, FIZZ, to knit a quick scarf with a lot of texture and color details. See the Trio/Fizz scarf here and the very easy pattern.

February 7, 2004 - We are introducing two new yarns for Mid-Season (summer-fall 2004). What this means is we have found some new styles and can't wait to introduce them!  The first one is TRIO - here's a page preview. The other will be shown here in a few days.

January 24, 2004 - I'm on the Alumni Board for the College of Environmental Design (CED) at UC Berkeley and we had a Board meeting today - I took along a ball each of Squiggle and Mikado Ribbon and a size 13 circular CPY Bamboo and got 4/5 of a scarf done during the meeting - I decided since so many shops are ordering the Very Pink color of Squiggle (which we call Code Pink) I had better do a pink theme - so here it is, scarf #59 on the list. Fast and easy and knit lengthwise.

January 21, 2004 - Added a photo of a Black-White combination to the Tingle+Deco-Ribbon scarf and fresh photos of Summer Net. Summer Net is a new yarn due in March made with "Cool Tech" (a combination of cotton and polyester spun to wick moisture away from skin for summery cool knits).

January 18, 2004 - A new Scarf + Hat combination knit with Splash and Deco-Ribbon. The hat is knit with just 2 needles, so if you aren't comfortable with round knitting, here's a hat for you, see the photo at the right.

January 16, 2004 - Last night I finished a 2-color Squiggle scarf (one end each of 2 colors) knit lengthwise on size 15 needles. I love the way it came out. I know this is frustrating to those waiting for Squiggle, it will be arriving in the first shops who ordered it in late February in the full range of colors, but I have to keep working with my sample balls to show what it can do.

January 15, 2004 - An elongated Cotton Chenille hat with Splash trim and pom-pom. The photo shows a hat in Christmas colors, but make it any color combinations you choose. The free pattern is sized for Adult and 11-12 yrs (pre-teen).

January 13, 2004 - A super soft and cozy pair of slippers - knit with Cotton Chenille and Whisper microfiber eyelash. Whip up a pair to keep your feet warm or for a gift. Here's the free pattern. See a photo at the right, these slippers are knit on 2 SP needles, not on DPs.

January 11, 2004 - A new section just started on this web site - "Swatches" - a place to show experimental swatches combining colors and textures of Crystal Palace Yarns - take a look Here. Would you find more of this helpful? Are you a person who likes to swatch and would you  want to share yours here? We can accept either digital photos or scans (lay swatch on scanner and set the width for the swatch part to 400-450 pixels). Add your name, location and notes on the swatch to an email and send to swatches-at-straw.com - (replace the -at- with @)

January 11, 2004 - Summer Net + LightPipe combined to make an unusual look, light scarf. Knit on size 15s.

January 10, 2004 - a cute little felted cell phone bag pattern in Labrador and Fizz, designed by Barbara Breiter is now up on her About.com knitting site HERE. The pattern is free.

January 8, 2004 - Want a quick slipper project that will feel Oh-So-Cozy on your feet?
See our new free Whisper + Cotton Chenille slipper pattern. Special thanks to Barbara Breiter for developing this pattern for us. [The photo will be up early next week.]

January 8, 2004 - Usually "just one more" means chocolate, but this time it means "just one more swatch and I'll be done..."  Once I started putting colors of Whisper and Shimmer together for more colorways of the easy Whisper-Shimmer Scarf (1 ball each) I just couldn't stop! Here are 8 more color pairs to consider. Well, at least it's not fattening behavior. And, last night I did 4 new combos of Squiggle in my favorite color "Circus" with 4 different colors of Fizz. Happy-cheerful colors!

January 6, 2003 - added one more color combination to the Splash+Squiggle Two Hour Scarf: white Splash with black Squiggle.

January 5, 2004 - Added photos of our newest Undyed Yarn for Dyeing - Whisper - now we have 5 yarns available on hanks, tied for dyeing (or as a bargain for anyone wanting to knit or weave with natural, undyed yarns). We plan to add another undyed, ultra-soft nylon fleecy-type yarn for dyeing soon, too. (Nylon dyes with the same categories of dye as wool does.)

January 4, 2004 - Two brimmed Hat patterns: one with Deco-Ribbon and Tingle and the other with Raggedy and Tingle. Both knit in the round with eyelash brims. Photo at right shows one of the hats.

January 2, 2004 - I've been playing with felting lightly for a scarf. Here's the first result - Iceland combined with Fizz with an hourglass edge. I show before felting and after felting photos.
