Description:  This simple crocheted baby hat makes a great gift!  Panda Cotton is soft and dainty, with a light sheen and subtle stretch that make it very comfortable.

Level:  Easy (ch, sl st, sc, dc, working in the rnd)

Size:  12½" circumference

Materials: 

  • 1-50g ball of Crystal Palace Panda Cotton (shown in 531 "Calypso")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo Crochet Hooks in US size G, or size needed for gauge
  • 24-30" contrasting ribbon
  • Slit stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle (for fastening off, if not using hook)

Gauge:  4½ sts = 1" on dc

Abbreviations:   beg- beginning; ch- chain; dc- double crochet; hdc- half double crochet; rep- repeat; rnd- round; sc- single crochet; sk- skip; sl st- slip stitch

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Note:  Except for the first ring, you will work in a spiral, rather than joining each rnd with a sl st.  Move the marker up after each rnd to mark beg of new rnd.

 

Ch 6.  Join to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Work 8 sc in ring.  Do not join with a sl st.  Place marker for beg of rnd.  [8 sc]

Rnd 2:  Work 2 dc in each sc around. [16 dc]

Rnd 3:  *Work dc in next dc, work 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [24 dc]

Row 4:  *Work dc in each of next 2 dc, work 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [32 dc]

Row 5:  *Work dc in each of next 3 dc, work 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [40 dc]

Rnd 6:  Work dc in each dc.

Rnd 7:  *Work dc in each of next 4 dc, work 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [48 dc]

Rnd 8:  Work dc in each dc.

Rnd 9:  *Work dc in each of next 5 dc, work 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [56 dc]

 

Continue to work dc in each dc 4½" high.  Begin edging.

 

Edging:

Rnd 1:  *sc in next sc, ch 5, sk 3 sc; rep from * to end of rnd.  [14 loops made]

Rnd 2:  *(sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in loop; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3:  sc in each st to last st, sl st to join.

 

Fasten off.  Weave in ends with hook or tapestry needle.  Thread ribbon in and out of hoops and tie.
