INSTRUCTIONS

Designer note:  When trying the hat on a 3-year old girl, she was thrilled to have what she called “little braidies” on each side of the hat.

Using smaller needle and main color, cast on 74 (82) stitches. Do not join.  Beginning on the wrong side, P2, (K2, P2) to end of row.  Continue in established rib for 1”.  End by working a wrong side row.

Change to larger needle and continue as follows:

Row 1:  Nubbles:  Beginning 10” from beginning of yarn, purl across, pulling nubs to front and holding them in place.  Cut Nubbles, leaving a 10” strand.  Return to beginning of row just completed.

Rows 2-5:  MC:  Work in established rib.  Do not cut yarn at end of row 5, just carry MC up along the side of the hat.

Repeat rows 1-5 three (four) times more.

Work an additional 3 rows rib with MC.  End by working a wrong-side row.  Turn.

Joining:  K2 tog, work established rib to last 2 stitches, K2 tog.

Continue working in the round as follows:  K1, place marker to designate beginning of rounds.  Do not turn, but continue knitting the K sts and purling the P sts for 4 rounds:  72 (80)  sts.

Begin Decreasing:

Row 1: *P2, K2, P2, K2 tog* all around.

Row 2 and all alternate rounds:  K the K sts, P the P sts.

Row 3: *P2, K2, P1, K2 tog* all around

Row 5:  *P2, K2, K2 tog* all around

Row 7:  *P2, K1,  K2 tog* all around

Row 9:  *P2, k2 tog* all around

Row 11:  *P1, K2 tog* all around

Row 13:  K2 tog all around.  Cut yarn, leaving a 10” tail.  Draw tail through remaining stitches and pull up firmly.  Fasten off.

Finishing:  Cut 2 additional strands of Nubbles and 10 strands main color (20” long) to increase yarn for side fringe if the braids are desired.  Pull the strands together and tie for the braid.  (See photo)

If the braids are not desired. weave ends of main color and Nubbles through the work on the wrong side.  To weave Nubbles, use a scissors to carefully trim off the nubs without cutting the strand wound around the yarn.
