Cotton Twirl & Panda Cotton

Description:  This is a fun knit, and super cute.  It is sized for baby to toddler.  Using small needles with Cotton Twirl between bands of Panda Cotton produces the sear sucker effect on the skirt.  The cast on is the same for all three sizes.

Level:  Easy

Size:  9 -12 month (18 month) (24 month)

Materials: 

  • 2 (3, 3) ball of Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl (shown in 2927 "Calypso")
  • 1 ball of Crystal Palace Panda Cotton (shown in 530 "Mango")
  • 24" circular needles in US 5 and 11
  • Button (for back closure)
  • Yarn sewing needle
  • Stitch markers

Gauge:  (These are for gauge swatch purposes; gauge will change in garment when striping the two yarns together.)
4 sts =1" over St st using Cotton Twirl & US 11 needles
7 sts=1" over St St using Panda Cotton & US 5 needles

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 150, placing a marker at 75 and at the beginning.  Join in round.

Round 1 - purl.

           2 - knit.

           3 - purl.

Knit 7 rounds.

Switch to size 5 needles and Panda Cotton.  Knit 7 rounds.

Switch to size 11 needles and Cotton Twirl.  Knit 7 rounds.

 

Alternate Panda Cotton and Cotton Twirl every 7 rounds until you have 4 Cotton Twirl sections for size 9 - 12 mo, 5 Cotton Twirl sections for a size 18 mo and 6 Cotton Twirl sections total for a size 24 mo.

 

Knit 7 more rounds with Panda Cotton on size 5's.  

 

STAYING ON SIZE 5'S,  knit 2 rounds w/Cotton Twirl.  Bind off 4 (5) (5) stitches. Knit to marker, turn, bind off 4 (5) (5) stitches (purling).  Purl back.  You are now working on just the front of the dress.  Turn.

1) ssk, knit to last two stitches, k2tog.

2) purl.

3) ssk, knit to last two stitches, k2tog.

4) purl.

 

Switch to Panda Cotton and work 6 (6)(8) rows stockinette.

Switch to Cotton Twirl (still on size 5's) and work 6 (6) (8) rows stockinette.

Switch to Panda Cotton one more time and work 6 (6) (8) rows.

Work 6 rows stockinette with Cotton Twirl.

On Row 7, knit 10 stitches, put remaining stitches on holder or waste yarn.

Purl back 10 stitches.

K2tog, knit 9.

Purl.

K2tog, knit 8.

Purl.

Work 8 (10) (10) more rows in stockinette - put on holder or waste yarn.

Leaving center stitches on holder, put last 10 stitches on needles.

Starting on the knit side...attach yarn.

1) ssk, knit to end of row.

2) purl.

3) ssk, knit to end of row.

4) purl.

Work in stockinette stitch for 10 more rows - put stitches on holder.

Back

Work the same as the front until you've done the last set of panda cotton rows.  Work 2 rows stockinette in Cotton Twirl placing a marker at the half way point.

Knit to marker, turn purl back.

Continue working stockinette for 12 (14) (14) rows.

Knit 1 more row, turn.

Bind off on the purl side to last 8 stitches, purl last 8 stitches, place on holder.

Attach yarn to knit remaining half of back stitches.  At beginning of row 14(16) (16), purl 8 and bind off remaining stitches.

Turn dress inside out and 3 needle bind off shoulder seems together.

Using Cotton Twirl, Pick up and knit 40 (46) (50) stitches around armhole, purl one round, knit one round and bind off loosely.

Repeat for 2nd armhole.  

Starting at back section, pick up and knit 40 (46) (50) stitches around the neck of the dress.  Work back and forth in garter stitch for 2 more rounds.  Bind off loosely.  Crochet a loop for button hole on back rt side. 

 

Sew on a button and you're done!
