Description:  Subtle geometric patterns in two colors of Cotton Twirl make this hat fun to knit and a winner to wear or gift!

Level:  Easy

Size:  Adult S/M  (~20" in circumference)

Materials: 

  • 1-50g ball Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl (shown in 2926 'Viola’) = MC
  • 1-50g ball Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl (shown in 2244 'Fandango') = CC
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 16" circular needle in US size 7 as well as dpn in US size 6, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  4.5 sts=1" in St st with Cotton Twirl

 

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CC- contrast color; CO- cast on; k- knit; K2tog- knit 2 sts together (decrease of 1 st); kfb- knit in front and back loop to increase by 1 stitch; MC- main color; p- purl; psso- pass slip st over; rnd- round; st(s)- stitch(es); sl- slip st

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With CC, cast on 88 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist.

Work in K2, P2 rib for ~1 in from cast on edge.

Join MC (carry color not in use up each rnd)

 

Work 8 rnds of Motif 1 with MC.

Motif 1:

Rnd 1: *(K1, P7) around. 

Rnd 2: *(K2, P5, K1) around

Rnd 3: *(K3, P3, K2) around. 

Rnd 4: *(K4, P1, K3) around

Rnd 5: as Rnd 4

Rnd 6:  as Rnd 3

Rnd 7: as Rnd 2

Rnd 8: as Rnd 1

 

Work 8 rnds of Motif 2 with CC.

Motif 2:

Rnd 1: *(P1, K7) around.   

Rnd 2: *(P2, K5, P1) around

Rnd 3: *(P3, K3, P2) around. 

Rnd 4: *(P4, K1, P3) around

Rnd 5: as Rnd 4

Rnd 6:  as Rnd 3

Rnd 7: as Rnd 2

Rnd 8: as Rnd 1

 

With MC: Kfb (an Inc of 1 st), K43, Kfb, K43 (90 sts).   Work Motif 3.

 

Motif 3:

Rnds 1 & 2: *(K1, P9).

Rnds 3 & 4: *(K2, P7, K1)

Rnds 5 & 6: *(K3, P5, K2

Rnds 7 & 8: *(K4, P3, K3)

Rnds 9 & 10: *(K5, P1, K4)

Rnds 11 & 12: as rnds  9 & 10

Rnds 13 & 14: as rnds 7 & 8

Rnds 15 & 16: as rnds 5 &6

Rnds 17 & 18: as rnds 3 & 4

Rnds 19 & 20: as rnds 1 & 2

 

Join CC and change to dpn for Crown Shaping.

 

Crown Shaping:

Dec Rnd 1: *(P1, K2tog, K5, K2tog).

Work one rnd *(P1, K7)

Dec Rnd 2: *(P1, K2tog, K3, K2tog).

Work one rnd *(P1, K5)

Cut CC and change to MC

Dec Rnd 3: *(P1, K2tog, K1, K2tog).

Work one rnd *(P1, K3)

 

Final decreases: K2tog around. Repeat until only ~6-8 sts remain. Cut yarn, leaving an ~8 in end.

 

With crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull yarn through each st and drop off needle. Pull together snugly. Take all ends to inside.

 

Finishing:

Work all ends in snugly.  Try on and dance around!
