Cotton Twirl

Scalloped Hat

Description:  The hat motif adds a pretty scalloped line to the hem. Working the design with two colors of Cotton Twirl makes it unique.

Level:  Easy

Size:  Adult S/M (~20" in circumference)

Materials: 

  • 1-50g ball Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl (shown in 2916 "Indigo") = MC
  • 1-50g ball Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl (shown in 2243 "Sapphire Sea") = CC
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 16" circular needle in US size 7 as well as dpn in US size 6, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  4.5 sts=1" in St st with Cotton Twirl

 

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CC- contrast color; CO- cast on; k- knit; K2tog- knit 2 sts together (decrease of 1 st); kfb- knit in front and back loop to increase by 1 stitch; MC- main color; p- purl; psso- pass slip st over; rnd- round; st(s)- stitch(es); sl- slip st; yo- yarn over (increases by one stitch)

 

Pattern:

Rnd 1: K

Rnd 2: *(K1, YO, K3, (Sl1, K2tog, PSSO), K3, YO, K1)

Rnds 3 & 4: K around.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With MC, cast on 88 sts. Join, being careful not to twist.

P 2 rnds with MC; join CC. Carry yarn not in use up each rnd (or cut the inactive yarn and rejoin as needed).

 

With CC, work 6 rnds in Pattern: (Rnds 1-4, and Rnds 1 & 2)

With MC, work 3 rnds: (Rnds 3-4, and Rnd 1)

With CC, work Rnd 2

With MC, work 8 Rnds: (Rnds 3, 4, 1-4, 1, 2)

With CC, work 6 Rnds: (Rnds 3, 4, 1-4)

With MC, work 14 rows pattern: (Rnds 1-4)3x, and Rnds 1 &2.

 

Hat should be ~6 in from cast on edge. With CC, Work Pattern Rnds 1 &2.

 

Begin Crown Shaping using MC.

Crown Shaping: switch to dpn as needed

Dec Rnd 1: *(K1, YO, K1, K2tog, (Sl1, K2tog, PSSO), K2tog, K1, YO, K1) around. K1 rnd

Dec Rnd 2: *(K1, YO, K2tog, (Sl1, K2tog, PSSO), K2tog, YO, K1), around. K1 rnd

Dec Rnd 3: *(K2tog, YO (Sl1, K2tog, PSSO) YO, K2tog) around. K 1 rnd.

 

Cut MC and Switch to CC for remainder of hat.

 

Dec Rnd 4: *(K2tog (Sl1, K2tog, PSSO) around. K 1 rnd

 

Final sts: with CC, K2tog until only ~6-8 sts rem. Cut leaving an 8 in end.

 

With crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull yarn through each st and drop off needle. Pull together snugly. Take all ends to inside.

 

Finishing:

Work all ends in snugly. Try on and dance around!
