Danube Bulky & Gold Rush

Dotty-Stripes Hat

Description:  This pattern uses a clever combination of Danube Bulky and Gold Rush to make a unique hat.  Slip-stitch mosaic design adds visual and knitting interest.  The bulky gauges of both yarns makes it work up quickly.

Level: Easy/Intermediate (k2tog & psso decreases, working in the rnd)

Size:  Adult Medium

Materials: 

  • 1 ball Crystal Palace Danube Bulky (shown in 905 "Fernwood")  = MC

  • 1 ball Crystal Palace  Gold Rush (shown in 1003 “Morning Dew”) = CC

  • Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles 16" circular in US sizes 8 & 9; double-pointed in US size 8 for hat finish (or size needed for gauge)
  • Stitch marker
  • Crochet hook or yarn sewing needle

Gauge:  4.25 sts=1 inch over pattern stitch on larger needles

Abbreviations:  beg- beginning; CO- cast on; dec- decrease; inc – increase; k- knit; kfb -k into front and back of same st (inc by 1 st); k2tog- knit 2 stitches together (dec by 1 st); p- purl; psso- pass slipped st over; rep- repeat; rnd- round;  sl-1- slip 1 st; ssk- slip 1 stitch knitwise onto right needle, slip 2nd stitch knitwise onto right needle, slip both stitches back onto left needle and knit them together (dec by 1 st); st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With smallest circular needles and MC, CO 72 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist; place marker to mark beg of rnd.  K all sts around for 6 rnds.  Join CC.  (Carry the yarn not in use up as you go.)

 

Begin Pattern:

With CC and larger needles -

Rnds 1 & 2: K2 rnds CC

Rnd 3: *(K2 MC, Sl-2 CC), repeat around.

Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 2

Rnds 5 & 6: Repeat Rnds 1&2

With MC

Rnds 7 & 8: K 2 rnds MC

Rnd 9: *(Sl-2 MC, K2CC), repeat around.

Rnd 10: As Rnd 6

Rnds 11 & 12: As Rnds 7 & 8

 

Repeat these 12 rnds until the stripe pattern is ~ 5-5.5 in from cast-on edge.

 

Crown Decreases:

Crown Patt Rnd 1: with CC *(K2tog, K2 around) (54 sts)

Crown Patt Rnd 2: with CC, k around

Crown Patt Rnd 3: with MC *(K2 MC, Sl-2 CC) around, end K2MC

Crown Patt Rnd 4: repeat Crown Patt Rnd 3

Crown Patt Rnd 5: With CC, K around

Crown Patt Rnd 6: with CC, *(K2tog, K2 around); end K2tog (40 sts)

Designer's Note: Change to #8 dpn as st count drops.

Crown Patt Rnd 7: With MC, K around

Crown Patt Rnd 8: With MC, *(K2tog, K2 around). (30 sts)

Crown Patt Rnd 9: With CC *(Sl-2 MC, K2 CC), around; end K2 CC

Crown Patt Rnd 10: Repeat Crown Patt Rnd 9

Crown Patt Rnd 11: With MC, K around

Crown Patt Rnd 12: With MC *(K2tog, K2) around, end K2tog (22 sts)

Crown Patt Rnd 13: With CC, K2tog around (11 sts)

Crown Patt Rnd 14: With CC, K2tog around, end K1.

 

Cut yarn leaving an ~8 in end. With crochet hook, pull yarn through each st and drop off needle. Pull end snugly and take end to inside of cap. Secure on inside of hat and weave in all ends.
