Bandana Cowl

Description:  This cowl has a nice bandana shape.  It is first worked back and forth, than joined and finished off in the round.

Level: Intermediate (working in the round, eyelets, left and right slanting decreases)

Size:  44" circumference at widest part (top of Second Border)

Materials: 

  • 2 balls of Crystal Palace Danube Aran (shown in 608 "Passion Flower")
  • US size 7 Crystal Palace Bamboo 26" Circular Needle, or size needed for gauge
  • (Optional: US size 9 single pointed needles for binding off)
  • Stitch marker

Gauge:  20 sts=4" in St st

Abbreviations: 

Sm      slip marker

Pm      place marker

Ssk     sl 1 knitwise, sl the next st knitwise, k both sts tog

Sk2P   sl 1, K2 tog, psso

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 2 sts. K 12 rows (6 garter ridges). Turn and pick up 6 sts along ends of garter ridges;

Turn and pick up 2 sts along cast-on edge.  [10 sts]  Turn. K5, pm, K5.

 

Row 1 (RS):  K2, yo, K to 1 st  before marker, yo, K1, sm, K1, yo, K to last 2 sts, yo, K2.

Row 2 (WS):  K2, P to last 2 sts, K2.

 

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 15 sts on ea side of marker. End by working Row 1.

Next row (WS):  K to 1 st before marker, P1, sm, P1, K to end.

 

Begin pattern:

Row 1:  K2, yo, K to 1 st before marker, yo, K1, sm, K1, yo, K to 2 sts before end, yo, K2.

Row 2:  K2, P to last 2 sts, K2

Row 3:  Repeat Row 1.

Row 4:   K to 1 st before marker, P1, sm, P1, K to end.

 

Repeat these 4 rows until there are 67 sts ea side of center marker. End by working Row 4.

 

Continue as follows  (You will now be working in the round.) :

 

Round 1:  K1, yo, K to 1 st before center marker, yo, K1, sm, K1, yo, K to 1 st before ending marker, yo, K1 – 69 sts ea side. Do not turn. 

Join, place marker and continue in the round.

Round 2:  K one round.

Round 3:  Repeat Round 1.  [71 sts ea side]

Round 4:  Knit.

 

A multiple of 4 + 3 is required for the first part of the border.

 

First Border:

Round 1: (K1, yo, *K1, yo, sk2p, yo.*) Repeat between * to 2 sts before center marker, K1, yo, K1, sl center marker. Repeat between ( ) to 2 sts before ending marker, K1, yo, K1.

 

Round 2 and all alternate rounds: Knit.

 

Round 3:  (K1, yo, K1, *K1, yo, sk2p, yo*). Repeat between * to 3 sts before center marker, K2, yo, K1, sm. Repeat between( ) to 3 sts before ending markr, K2, yo, K1.

 

Round 5:  (K1, yo, K2, *K1, yo, sk2p, yo*). Repeat between * to 4 sts before center marker, K3, yo, K1, sm. Repeat between ( ) to 3 sts before ending marker, K3, yo, K1.

 

Round 7:  (K1, yo, K3, *K1, yo, sk2p, yo*). Repeat between * to 5 sts before center marker, K4, yo, K1, sm. Repeat between ( ) to 5 sts before ending marker, K4, yo, K1.

 

Round 8:  Knit

 

Repeat these 8 Rounds once more. [87 sts between markers]

 

Second Border (worked on a multiple of 12 + 3 sts):  See chart.

 

 

End sts                                        Repeat = 12 st                                             Beg sts

 

Bind off loosely.  (Optional:  Use tip of size 9 needle for looser bind-off.)
