Merino 5 & Mochi Plus

Estonian Rib Hat

Description:  Pattern is written for ribbed edge with rolled edge option in parentheses.

Level:  Easy (working in the round, k2tog decrease)

Size:  Adult Medium

Materials: 

  • 1 ball Crystal Palace Mochi Plus
  • 1 ball Crystal Palace Merino 5
  • Size 7 – 16” circular needle
  • Size 5 – 16” circular needle for ribbed edge hat only
  • Size 7 double point needles
  • 5 stitch marker

Gauge:  20 sts = 4” in stockinette st

Abbreviations:  k- knit; k2tog- knit 2 together; p- purl; rnd- round; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

Right increase (inc):  Tip left needle forward and knit into purl bump on st one row below, then knit the st on the left needle.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 100 sts with Merino 5 and size 5 needle for ribbed edge hat.  (Cast on with size 7 needle for rolled edge hat.Place marker and join, taking care not to twist sts.

 

For hat with ribbed edge:  Work in K1-P1 rib for 1”.  Knit one round even. 

(For hat with rolled edge:  Work in stockinette st for 2”.)

 

For both styles, work Increase round:

*K4, right inc in next st* all around – 120 sts.  Knit one round even.

 

Change to Mochi Plus and work following pattern for 4 rnds:

*K2, yo, K2, K2 tog*.  Repeat between * around.

 

Change to Merino 5 and work 4 rnds of above pattern.  Continue repeating this pattern, alternating between Mochi Plus and Merino 5 every 4 rounds, until hat measures 6.5” from cast-on edge for ribbed hat, ending with 4 rounds of Mochi Plus.

(For rolled edge hat, measure from bottom of roll.)

 

Change to Merino 5 and continue with Merino 5 only for rest of hat.

 

Begin decreasing: 

Rnd 1*K4, K2 tog* all around – 100 sts

Rnd 2:   *K18, K2 tog, place marker.*  Repeat between * 4 times more – 95 sts

Rnd 3:   *K to 2 sts before marker, K2 tog.*

 

Repeat Rnd 3 until 10 sts remain, changing to double point needles when stitches no longer fit around circular needle.

 

Cut yarn and draw thru remaining loops.  Draw up firmly and fasten off.
