Shell Cowl

Description:  This cowl features a basic crocheted shell pattern.  Working it on a larger hook adds drape (and speed).

Level:  Advanced Beginner/Intermediate (working in rnd, single crochet foundation, sc, dc)

Size:  Short (Long)

             25.5 (52)" circumference x 10" high

Materials: 

  • 2 (4) balls of Crystal Palace Mochi Plus (shown in 624 "Drama" in Long version)
  •  Crochet Hook in size H and J, or size needed for gauge (Crystal Palace Bamboo recommended)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker (to mark beg of rnd)

Gauge:  ~3 dc=1" on larger hook

Abbreviations:  beg- beginning; ch- chain; dc- double crochet; rep- repeat; rnd- round; sc- single crochet; sk- skip; sl st- slip stitch

 

Shell Pattern:

Rnd 1:  Ch 2,* sk 3 sc, work 4 dc's in next sc; rep from * to last 4 sc's, sk 3 sc, work 3 dc's in last sc.  Join with sl st.

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, sc in each dc around.  Join with sl st.

Rnd 3:  Ch 2, work 3 dc's in same st, sk 3 sc, * work 4 dc's in next sc, sk 3 sc; rep from * to end of rnd.  Join with sl st.

Rnd 4:  Ch 1, sc in each dc around.  Join with sl st.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With smaller hook, ch 76 (156) using Single Foundation Chain technique.  (See YouTube for video tutorials on Single Crochet Foundations.)

 

Join with sl st, being careful not to twist.  Work one rnd of sc's.

 

Work Rnds 1 &  2 of Shell Pattern.  Change to larger hook.  Work Rnds 3 & 4. 

 

Repeat Rnds 1-4 of Shell Pattern 5 more times, then work Rnds 1 & 2 once more.  Change to smaller hook and work Rnds 3 & 4 of Shell Pattern once.  Work one more rnd of sc's.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
