Mochi Plus

Swirl Hat

Description:  A long spiral of garter stitch moves the shifting colors of Mochi Plus in interesting ways. Uses just 2 balls of Mochi Plus.

Size:  Adult average, Circumference: 18" around *

*The garter stitch fabric is very flexible, so this hat will fit a range of sizes. See below for further tips on adjusting the size.

Materials: 

  • Yarn: 2 balls of Crystal Palace Yarns Mochi Plus (Top picture shows hat done in 639 "Sand Painting")
  • Needles: Crystal Palace Bamboo double-pointed needles size US 10 / 6mm Adjust needle size if necessary to get the correct gauge.
  • Small stitch holder
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  18 sts and 32 rows = 4"/10cm over garter stitch

Abbreviations:  CO- Cast on; K- Knit; K2tog- Knit 2 stitches together; PU- Pick up; RS- Right side (outside of garment); St(s)- Stitch(es); WS- Wrong side (inside of garment)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

CO 17 sts. Work in Garter Stitch (knit every row) until piece measures 32" long.

Next row (RS): K1, k2tog, k to end of row.

Next row (WS): K.

 

Repeat the last 2 rows until 3 sts remain.

 

Next row (RS): K, k2tog.

Next row (WS): K.

Next row (RS): K2tog. Do not break yarn. Place this final st on st holder.

 

Fold strip into a spiral as shown in diagram, with diagonal decreased edge to the top of hat. Sew spiral seam as shown in diagram.

 

Crown:

Transfer held st to DP needles. PU and K 59 more sts along top edge of hat, as shown in diagram - 60 sts. Place marker on needle to indicate beginning of round.

 

K one round.

Next round: * K4, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 50 sts.

K one round.

Next round: * K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 40 sts.

K one round.

Next round: * K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 30 sts.

K one round.

Next round: * K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 20 sts.

K one round.

Next round: * K2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 10 sts.

 

Break yarn, draw through remaining sts, pull tight and fasten off.Weave in ends.

 

Fold up lower edge of hat along line marked on diagram. I like it with the notch worn over the left ear, but spend some time in front of the mirror and see what works for you.

 

To make a different size hat:

To make this hat for a child, cast on 13 sts and work even until strip measures 28".
PU and K only 50 sts around the crown and begin with 2nd set of crown decreases.
To make this hat for a large adult, CO as given, but work until strip measures 36". PU and K 70 sts around crown and add 2 extra rounds to the crown, beginning with * K5, k2tog; repeat to end of round.
