Panda Silk

Lace & Star Stitch Shawlette

Description:  This sweet mini shawl features garter-stitch and star-stitch body with lace and garter-peaked edging.  It is perfect to keep the chill off shoulders, and would complement many outfits.  The color combination used in the sample has an antique, retro quality to it.  It takes three balls to make this two-color version, or just two balls if only using one color.

Level:  Intermediate

Size:  ~36" wide x 10" high

Materials: 

  • 2 balls of Crystal Palace Panda Silk in MC (shown in 3204 "Natural")
  • 1 ball of Crystal Palace Panda Silk in CC (shown in 3024 "Aquamarine")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 35" circular needles in US size 3 and US size 4* (or size needed for gauge)
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  22 sts = 4” in garter stitch after blocking

Abbreviations: 

SK2P -  Slip one, k 2 tog, PSSO

RS – Right Side

WS – Wrong Side

* Larger size needle is for cast on and bind off only.  It can be omitted if knitter casts on and binds off loosely.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Top Lace:  Using contrasting color and size 4* circular needle, cast on 303 sts.Knit one row.   (Pattern is worked on a multiple of 10 + 3 sts.)  Change to main color and size 3 needle and follow chart. 

 

 

End by working a WS row.

 

Work 4 rows stockinette st, ending by working a WS row.

 

Decrease row:K6, sk2p, *K3, sk2p* across row, ending K6 instead of K3 – 205 sts.

 

Set sts aside, using either the size 3 needle, or a smaller needle if available.

 

Bottom Lace:Work a second lace border in same manner, but end by working 12 rows stockinette st.

 

Decrease row:K6, sk2p, *K3, sk2p* across row, ending K6 instead of K3 – 205 sts.

 

Place the top lace border on top of the bottom lace, holding the two needles parallel.

 

Use the end of one of the needles and knit across, inserting needle through the first st on

 

Both needles and knitting them together (do not bind off, but knit across all sts).

 

Knit 3 rows, ending by working a WS row.

 

Change to contrasting color and knit 3 rows, ending by working a RS row. 

 

Work open Star Stitch pattern as follows: 

Row 1 (WS) :  With CC, K2, *yo, K3, pass first of these 3 sts over other 2 sts.*  Repeat between * across, ending K1.

Row 2:  With CC, knit.

Row 3:  With MC, K2, *K3, pass first st over other 2 sts, yo.* end K1.

Row 4:  With MC, knit.

 

Repeat these 4 rows twice more. Continue as follows:

 

With CC, purl 1 row. Knit 2 rows.

With MC, knit 2 rows.

 

Begin Short Rows, using MC.

Short Row 1:  K104, turn.

Short Row 2:  K7, turn.

Short Row 3:  K to 1 st before gap created by turn on previous row, K2 tog, K3.Turn.  (It may be helpful to place a stitch marker at the turn to mark the gap.)

 

Repeat Short Row 3 until all sts have been used.  Turn and knit 2 rows, ending by working a WS row.

 

I-Cord Bind Off:

Cast on 2 sts, using cable cast on.Do not turn.

Row 1:  K2, K2 tog.  Turn.

Row 2:  P3.  Turn.

Row 3:  K2, K2 tog.

 

Repeat last 2 rows until all sts have been bound off.Bind off final 3 sts.  Fasten off.

 

Using size 4* needle and with right side facing, pick up and knit 25 sts along side of lace border, working through both layers of lace.Turn and bind off.

 

Repeat on second side of lace border.  Weave in ends.

* Larger size needle is for cast on and bind off only.  It can be omitted if knitter casts on and binds off loosely.
