Crystal Palace Yarns - FREE PATTERN - Knit

Panda Silk

Sweet Alyssum Shawl

Originally designed in Kid Merino by Lisa Dykstra for Crystal Palace Yarns.

Description:  This darling shawl features basic eyelet formations and garter ridges, finished off with a lovely picot edge. You begin at the top.  The triangle is formed by yo increases at the edges and center.

Level:  Intermediate (k2tog & ssk decreases, yo's, picot bind-off, following established stitch pattern)

Size:  49" long x 23" high (33" side) after blocking

Materials:

  • 3 balls Crystal Palace Panda Silk (shown in 3035 "Light Periwinkle")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo US size 4 circular needles or size needed
to obtain a nice lace fabric
  • Stitch markers (or loops of contrasting color yarn)
  • T-pins for blocking

Gauge:  6 sts=1" over St st before blocking (I got almost 5.5 sts/inch after blocking.)

Abbreviations:  bet = between; k = knit; k2tog = knit 2 sts together; p = purl; PU = pick up; rep = repeat; RS = right side; ssk = slip one st knitwise, slip one st purlwise, insert the left needle into the fronts of the two slipped sts and knit them together; st(s) = stitch(es); WS = wrong side; yo = yarn over

Section 3, 4 and 5:

Continue as established in Sections 1 and 2 (thus doing 3 more sections) adding reps as needed and stopping after Row 26 (WS row) of Section 5.  (In other words, stop right before working the purled row.)

Eyelet edging:

Next Row (RS):  Sl 1, k3, yo, k1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to before center st, yo, k1, yo, **ssk, yo; rep from **to last 5 sts, k1, yo, k4.

Next Row (WS):  Sl 1, k to end.

Next Row:  Sl 1, k3, yo, k to before center st, yo, k1, yo, k to last 4 sts, yo, k4.

Next Row:  Sl 1, k to end.

Next Row:  Sl 1, k3, yo, k to before center st, yo, k1, yo, k to last 4 sts, yo, k4.

On RS (with needle one to two sizes larger if you have a tendency to bind off tightly), bind off all sts using picot bind off.

How to picot bind off:

K a st without dropping it off needle. Now take the st on the right needle and slip it to left needle (you have made a new st). Rep this once more, 2 sts made. Now bind off 8 sts and slip remaining st from right to left needle. Rep this process of making 2 new sts then binding off 8 sts across all remaining sts.

Finishing:  Weave in all ends. Block piece to measures below.
