18" Sausalito Crochet Shell Stitch Doll Set

Description:  This crocheted hat and cardigan combo is stylish on your favorite 18" doll (such as Madame Alexander or American Girl).

Level:  Intermediate

Size:  Sized to fit 18" doll, such as Madame Alexander, American Girl, etc.

Materials: 

Gauge:  Shell=1"

 

Abbreviations:   BP: back post; ch: chain; dc: double crochet; FP: front post; hdc: half double crochet; rep: repeat; rnd: round; sc: single crochet; sl st: slip stitch; sp: space; st(s): stitch(es); yo: yarn over

 

Stitches Used:

Shell:  (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st or space

Single Corner:  (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in same st or space

Double Corner:  (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st or space

FP (Front Post): yo, insert hook from front to back around post of next dc, pull up a loop, complete dc.

BP (Back Post): yo, insert hook from back to front around post of next st, pull up a loop, complete dc.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Sweater

1:  Ch 45 loosely. Turn and dc in 3rd ch from hook and next 4 ch, double corner in next ch, *dc in next 9 ch, double corner in next ch*. Repeat between * twice more, dc in next 6 ch - 8 dc on each front, 13 dc on each sleeve and on back.

2:  Ch 2, turn. FP around next dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next dc, *single corner in next corner sp, FP around next dc, (skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP round next dc) twice.* Repeat between * twice more, single corner in next corner sp, FP around next dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next dc, dc in top of turning ch.

3:  Ch 2, turn. BP, shell, BP, dc in next dc, *double corner in corner, dc in next dc, (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in next dc.* Repeat between * twice more, double corner in corner sp, dc in next dc, BP, shell, BP, dc in top of turning ch.

4:  Ch 2, turn. FP, shell, FP, dc in next 3 dc, *single corner in corner sp, dc in next 3 dc, (FP, shell) twice, FP, dc in next 3 dc.* Repeat between * twice more, single corner in corner, dc in next 3 dc, FP, shell, FP, dc in top of turning ch.

5:  Ch 2, turn. BP, shell, BP, dc in next 4 dc, *double corner in corner, dc in next 4 dc, (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in next 4 dc.* Repeat between * twice more, double corner in corner, dc in next 4 dc, BP, shell, BP, dc in top of turning ch.

6:  Ch 2, turn. FP, shell, FP, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next dc, *single corner in corner sp, FP around next dc, skip 2 ch, shell in next dc, (FP, shell) twice, FP, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next dc.*
Rep between * twice more, single corner in next corner sp, FP around next dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP, shell, FP, dc in top of turning ch.

7:  Ch 2, turn. (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in next dc, *single corner in next corner sp, dc in next dc (BP, shell)four times, BP, dc in next dc.* Repeat between * twice more, single corner in next corner sp, dc in next dc, (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in top of turning ch.

8:  Ch 2, turn. (FP, shell) twice, FP, dc in next 2 dc, *single corner in next corner sp,
dc in next 2 dc (FP, shell) four times, BP, dc in next 2 dc.* Repeat between *
twice more, single corner in next corner sp, dc in next 2 dc, (FP, shell) twice, FP,
dc in top of turning ch.

9:  Ch 2, turn. (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in next 3 dc, *single corner in next corner sp,
dc in next 3 dc (BP, shell)four times, BP, dc in next 3 dc.* Repeat between *
twice more, single corner in next corner sp, dc in next 3 dc, (BP, shell) twice, BP,
dc in top of turning ch.

Cut yarn and fasten off.

 

Divide for sleeves:

1:  With right side facing, join yarn with sl st to first corner sp, sl st into next dc, Ch 2, dc in next 3dc (FP, shell) four times, FP, dc in next 4 dc.

2-5:  Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, (BP, shell) 4 times, BP, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts.

6:  Ch 2, turn. Dc in next 3 sts, (FP, shell) 4 times, FP, dc in last 4 sts.

7:  Ch 2, turn. Dc in next 2 dc, (BP, shell) 4 times, BP, dc in last 4 dc.

8:  Ch 2, turn. Dc in next dc, dc decrease over next 2 dc, ch 1, sc in center of next shell,
(ch 2, sc in center of next shell) 3 times, ch 1, dc decrease over next 2 dc, dc in last 2 dc.

9:  Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp) 3 times, sc in next Sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in last 3 dc.

10-11:  Ch 1, turn. Sc in ea sc across. Fasten off.

 

Work second sleeve in the same manner, attaching yarn with sl st to corner sp betweenBack and right front.

 

Body

1:  With right side facing, attach yarn with sl st to to of turning ch at front edge. Ch 2, (FP, shell) twice, FP, dc in next 4 dc, dc in ch-2 corner sp, dc in next ch-2 corner sp, dc in next 4 dc, (FP, shell) four times, FP, dc in next 4 dc, dc in ch-2 corner sp,dc in next ch-2 corner sp, dc in next 4 dc, (FP, shell) twice, FP, dc in top of turning ch.

2:  Ch 2, turn. (BP, shell) twice, BP, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, dc in sp before next dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, (BP, shell) 4 times, BP, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, dc in sp before net dc, skip 2 dc, (BP, shell) twice, BP, dc in top of turning ch.

3:  Ch 2, turn. (FP, shell) to last 2 sts FP, dc in top of turning ch.

4:  Ch 2, turn. (BP, shell) to last 2 sts, BP, dc in top of turning ch.

5-6:  Repeat rows 3 and 4 once more.

7:  Ch 1, turn. (FP, 6 dc in center of next shell) tolast 2 dc, FP, dc in top of turning ch. Do not fasten off.

 

Front Band

1:  Ch 1, turn and working along right front edge, make 2 sc under the post of each dc to top of sweater - 28 sc.

2:  Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc to end.

3:  (buttonhole row) Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 8 sc, (ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc) twice, ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in last 2 sc.

4:  Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc, 2 sc in each ch-2 sp to end.

5:  Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc to end. Do not fasten off.

Ch 1, turn and work 1 row around neck edge by working *2sc, skip 1 ch* to draw up neck edge; ch 1, turn and work left front border as for right front, eliminating buttonholes. Fasten off.

 

Hat

1:  Ch 6, join with slip st to form ring.

2:  Ch 3, work 11 dc in ring. Join with sl st to beg ch. 3 - 12 dc.

3:  Ch 3, dc in sl st, 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st - 24 dc.

4:  Ch 3, dc in sl st, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc.* Repeat between * - 36 dc.

5:  Ch 4, dc in sl st, dc in next dc, *FP around next dc, dc in next dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, dc in next dc,*. Repeat between * around, ending last repeat FP, dc in last dc. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. - 48 dc.

6:  Sl st into next ch-1 space, (ch 3, dc in same space, ch 2, 2 dc in same space), FP around next FP, *shell in next ch-1 space*. Repeat between * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.

7:  Sl st to center sp of shell, repeat row 6

8-9:  Repeat row 7.

10:   Sl st to center sp of shell, ch 3, 5 dc in space. Complete round by working FP around post sts and 6 dc in center of shells. Join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.

 

Fasten off.
