"Unbottled Kisses - 1950s Style"

A quilt for the KISS Exhibit by Susan C. Druding

January 1998

size: 18 x 24 inches

Machine embroidery, machine and hand applique, machine quilting, digitized designs prepared on computer and stitched with a Pfaff 7570. The image for the outline of the bottle was an old-style Pepsi bottle and stitched in two sizes. The lips were digitized and stitched in heavy satin stitch in two sizes. The fabrics are all cotton, except the fabric forming the bottles is iridescent Organza with machine satin-stitch embroidered lips trapped under the organza. Batting is 100% cotton.

Unbottled Kisses, detail of bottles (28211 bytes)This detail shows a close up of the bottles and the quilting behind the bottles of the outlines stitched with rayon variegated corded embroidery threads. The organza is iridescent and looks rather "glass-like" in the actual quilt.

The lips are stitched in two sizes using a variety of threads on my Pfaff 7570. The "loose lips" are only stitched to the quilt in the center so that they are 3-dimensional and look partly open.

All the Pfaff embroidery was done in a hoop with the Creative Design program for the Pfaff.

kiss-top.jpg (24667 bytes)Here at the left side is a close up of the top of the quilt showing all the bottles.

The bottom half of the quilt is of the "kisses" piling up and ends in some larger blocks which were paper pieced. Detail of Unbottled Kisses (30491 bytes)I used colors which are a 1950s type palette. The odd colors of thread chosen for the lips suggest to me the weird colors of lipstick that teens wore in the 50s. The black lines are all satin stitched using black rayon machine embroidery thread.

These photos were taken with a digital Sanyo camera, but inside with a flash so the colors and lighting are not well balanced.
