INSTRUCTIONS
Mosaic Knitting uses 2 colors, but only one color is used at a time for two consecutive rows. The pattern is worked by reading the first row of the chart from right to left, knitting the sts of the working yarn and slipping the stitches of the resting yarn. The last 3 sts of every row are slipped with yarn in front, thus creating the I-cord edge.
Row 2 is worked not by working from the chart, but by knitting the sts of the working yarn and slipping the other stitches purlwise, with yarn in front. On the wrong-side rows the last 3 slipped stitches from the right-side row are knitted with the working color.
As an example, the first two rows are worked as follows:
Row 1: With Mochi, K4, sl 1, K2, [K1, sl 1, (K1, sl 1) 3 times, K3, sl 1, K2] six times, (K1, sl 1) 4 times, K3, sl 1, K1, sl 3 wyif.The arrows designate the slipped sts.
Row 2: With Mochi, K the first 3 slipped sts and all the Mochi sts, slip all Allegro sts wyif.
The 3rd and 4th rows are worked with the the Allegro DK, knitting the light stitches on the chart and slipping the dark stitches.
The band at beginning of hat is worked flat. After completion of the chart, the sts are joined to work crown in the round.
Begin Pattern:
Using smaller needle, cast on 107 sts. Do not join.Knit 5 rows. Change to larger needle and Allegro and knit 2 rows. Begin following chart.
Note: Stitches 8 thru 21 are repeated six times before ending with sts 22 thru 37.
Complete chart twice, then knit 2 rows Allegro, increasing 3 sts evenly spaced (110 sts)
Crown: Using Mochi Plus, place marker and join. Knit even in rounds until hat measures 6” from cast-on edge.
Shape crown: (K20, K2 tog), place marker, 5 times. Work all following rounds as follows:
Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2 tog, sl marker. Continue in this manner around until 10 sts remain.Cut yarn, leaving 10” tail. Thread onto tapestry needle and draw through remaining loops. Pull up firmly and fasten off.
For a traditional cap, sew sides of Mosaic piece together and sew buttons along seam for a decorative look. Or leave mosaic seam open and attach button to joining at center back.
